A young prince must rely on a mysterious stranger to save him when he is kidnapped during his coming-of-age tour in this swoony adventure that is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue meets Pirates of the Caribbean.
Prince Tal has long awaited his coming-of-age tour. After spending most of his life cloistered behind palace walls as he learns to keep his forbidden magic secret, he can finally see his family’s kingdom for the first time. His first taste of adventure comes just two days into the journey, when their crew discovers a mysterious prisoner on a burning derelict vessel.
Tasked with watching over the prisoner, Tal is surprised to feel an intense connection with the roguish Athlen. So when Athlen leaps overboard and disappears, Tal feels responsible and heartbroken, knowing Athlen could not have survived in the open ocean.
That is, until Tal runs into Athlen days later on dry land, very much alive, and as charming—and secretive—as ever. But before they can pursue anything further, Tal is kidnapped by pirates and held ransom in a plot to reveal his rumored powers and instigate a war. Tal must escape if he hopes to save his family and the kingdom. And Athlen might just be his only hope…

I didn’t know what to expect from In Deeper Waters — except for an adventure at sea and cute boys. Luckily for me, I found these, and even more.
In Deeper Waters is a young adult fantasy standalone following young Tal, the fourth child of Queen Carys, about to start his coming-of-age tour. But Tal has never left the castle, and lived all his life hidden from the world: he has magic in him, much like his great-grandfather who almost destroyed the world. If Tal’s secret is to be known, it could mean war, and danger for his family. As we found out, Prince Tal is a middle child very much attached to his siblings and he would do anything to protect them, even if it means living a secret. The sibling love is very strong in this book, not only from Tal but each five of them, and I really like when a book highlights such familial bond.
Everything changes, thought, when Tal meets Athlen, a mysterious boy he and his older brother rescued from an abandoned ship. The two boys feel an immediate connection, and Tal entrusts Athlen with his secret… only for Athlen to jump into the sea and disappear. Starts Tal’s adventure, made of a mysterious boy, a treasure chest full of gold, and political intrigues.
In Deeper Waters is a really gentle and soft story about being kind in a world that isn’t. Tal and Athlen are very cute boys, living a teenage love story. We get to see their romance grow through the adventure, but it doesn’t stop from being action-packed. You can’t get bored with In Deeper Waters: it is full of twists and quests, and you have the assurance, through its kind vibe, that everything will be alright. Plus, F.T. Lukens writes marvelously so, and some quotes will warm your heart for sure.
You’ll love In Deeper Waters if you love soft and gentle stories, fast-paced high fantasy, and The House in the Cerulean Sea.
I created a journal spread
In Deeper Waters inspired me to create a journal spread! I love journaling, I’ve had a bullet journal since 2018 and I am slowly testing digital journal too. I had fun created a spread that embodied In Deeper Waters, and I’m quite happy with how it turns out!
