Welcome to our first episode of this new series! I had the honor to talk with Amélie for this first ep, who is a close friend with very good taste when it comes to books!
Amélie decided to talk about one of her favorite books. When she told me the title, I wasn’t really surprised she had chosen this one: if you follow her on social media, especially Twitter, you may have read her numerous tweets about this novel. Amélie is a fierce defender and promoter of this one, and if she hasn’t already convinced you to read it, I hope she will now!
Hey, Ams! Thank you for agreeing on doing this, and basically being my lab rat, haha. You chose to talk about We Set The Dark On Fire, but for those who don’t know, can you tell us quickly what is this book about?
Basically, it’s set in a world where a husband will get two wives, a primera to run the household, and a segunda to raise the children. Add to this rebellion and a sapphic romance: that’s a win for me.
Intriguing! Why do you think people should read it?
I adored it because everyone in this book takes women for some stupid pretty thing, and it’s all about proving to them that nope, we are way more than that, and we will fight you. It also has one of the most beautiful sapphic romance I’ve seen.
I’m starting to like it more and more… But you, what did you like about it?
I’m a sucker for forbidden love! And what could be more forbidden than a primera loving a segunda?
Also ENEMIES TO LOVERS YES. And all the political background is so interesting!
Forbidden romance AND enemies to lovers? Oh, my! But can you tell me more about your favorite character?
It’s Dani definitely! But I can’t tell you a lot because all my love for her came from book 2 haha.
Secrets, secrets… Now we have to read book 1 and 2! But tell me, if my readers like those books, they’ll like We Set the Dark on Fire… But which books are we talking about?
I’d say Girls Of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan! (and I suck with finding books oops bad bookseller I am)
No, but it’s a good start! And I saw We Set the Dark on Fire had several editions, which one is your favorite? And why?
I only have the hardback, but I really want the paperback because it’s floppy!
Thank you so much for your time Ams, and for doing this! I don’t know about my readers, but you definitely convinced me! And that’s a wrap! Stick around a little more, and learn more about Amélie and We Set the Dark on Fire:
Amélie, known on the web as Lady Witchling, is a « bookseller, writer, witch, tea drinker or basically a book nerd who’s decided to make videos« . She has a very wide presence on social media, and you can follow her on several platforms :
WE SET THE DARK ON FIRE

ENNEMIES TO LOVERS / SLOW BURN / FORBIDDEN LOVE
At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children, but both are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret—that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico’s son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.
On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or to give up everything she’s strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?
